Rome, mid-1940s. Delia is a housewife who takes care of her husband Ivan, their three children and mother-in-law Ottorina, and also does small part-time jobs. Ivan, on the other hand, is the undisputed master of the family who earns barely enough to provide a roof over his head, but he has the need to constantly remind who is the breadwinner of the family, sometimes with ugly words, and sometimes with the help of a belt. Delia meekly accepts the family situation, trying to provide the best possible life for her children, and her greatest wish is to marry her daughter Marcella to a good and noble husband. However, when one day she receives a mysterious letter, she begins to forge some new plans.
